Here you will find information about grants available to Efling members. Applications are all made on my Efling pages.

To be eligible for scholarships, you must meet the following:


  • Membership fees must have been paid to Eflinga on your behalf for at least 6 consecutive months
    (for educational grants, it is sufficient to have paid for 6 months out of the last 24).

  • You must be or have been employed and have paid a premium to Efling when applying for a grant
    (you can apply for grants up to 3 months after leaving employment if you present a receipt covering the period during which payments were made to Efling on your behalf).

  • If you have been a member of Eflinga continuously for 5 years or more and you leave due to age or disability, you retain your rights for up to 24 months.

  • Grant amounts are based on minimum wage membership fees. Part-time work = proportional grant.

  • Receipts you present when applying for a grant must not be older than 12 months.

Health promotion - fitness training


  • You can use health promotion funding for fitness, sports, swimming, dance and more.

  • You can also use the grant to buy a bicycle.

  • The gym, sports club or school you use must have an ID number, permanent facilities and approved teachers or instructors.

  • are paid every 12 months , with a maximum of ISK 23,000 .

When you apply, you must submit:


  • An invoice that shows your name and social security number.

If the payment is not visible on the invoice, you add confirmation of payment (eg from online banking or by submitting a receipt).

Please note that the grant is only for you as an Efling member, and not for, for example, your children or other family members.

Educational grants


Grants to individuals

You can apply for an educational grant from Eflinga, to pay for part of the cost of studies, courses, leisure activities or trips related to such education. Educational grants are paid through two funds and it depends on where you work which fund you apply to.

  • Workforce (if you work for a private company)
  • Efling and public employer (if you work for the state, a municipality or a nursing home).


Select the fund that applies to you to see what grants are available.

  • Exception to the general rules:
    Members who do not speak Icelandic as their native language can apply for a refund for Icelandic lessons after having paid to the association for 1 month. The maximum payment is 90% for those working for private companies and 100% for those working for the public sector.

Grants to companies and institutions

Companies and institutions can apply for educational grants for courses or other education.

Select the appropriate fund for more information about grants. 

Psychology or social interview therapy


Grant awarded for treatments at:


  • A psychologist.


  • A psychiatric nurse.


  • Social or family counselor.


  • Addiction counselor.


  • Coach.


  • MFM food addiction counseling.


  • Art therapy or ADHD diagnosis/treatment for adults.


  • Consulting at Lausninn.


Up to 10,000 ISK is paid each time, up to 15 times every 12 months, for a maximum of 75% of the cost. 


The grant is awarded for interview therapy with a person who is not covered by a discount card from Icelandic Health Insurance and therefore does not pay for an interview with a psychiatrist. 


A payment receipt must be included with the application. If there is no confirmation of payment on the invoice, additional confirmation of payment must be submitted, for example from a bank account or a payment receipt from the invoice issuer.

Eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions


Grant for the purchase of glasses and/or contact lenses.


  • A maximum of 35,000 ISK is paid every 24 months.


  • The maximum payment is 50% of the cost.


A payment receipt must be included with the application. If there is no confirmation of payment on the invoice, additional confirmation of payment must be submitted, for example from a bank account or a payment receipt from the invoice issuer.

Physical therapy and rehabilitation


Grant awarded for rehabilitation and treatment of:


  • Certified physical therapist.


  • Certified medical massage therapist.


  • Health bather (educated from Fjölbraut in Ármúli).


  • Occupational therapist.


  • Speech therapist.


  • Nutritional consultant.


  • Osteopath.


  • Chiropractor.


  • Counseling at a Heart Center


Up to 2,500 ISK is paid each time for up to 15 times every 12 months, up to a maximum of 75% of the cost. 


A receipt of payment must be included with the application. If there is no confirmation of payment on the invoice, additional confirmation of payment must be submitted, for example from a bank account or a payment receipt from the invoice issuer. The date of each transaction must be included. 

Preventive strength


Preventive support includes: 


  • Cervical and breast cancer screenings. Both basic and follow-up screenings.


  • Bladder neck examinations.


  • Colonoscopy.


  • Risk assessment by Hjartavernd or another health risk assessment that does not fall under the Social Insurance Institution's co-payment system.


  • CPAP sleep masks for sleep apnea. Also applies to bitten gums.


  • Gait analysis.


  • Diagnosis of dyslexia.


A maximum of ISK 20,000 is paid every 12 months, up to 100% of the cost.


A payment receipt must be included with the application. If there is no confirmation of payment on the invoice, additional confirmation of payment must be submitted, for example from a bank account or a payment receipt from the invoice issuer.

Death benefit


Death benefits are paid to the estate of a deceased member. 

In vitro fertilization or artificial insemination


Support for in vitro or artificial insemination.


  • You can apply for treatment twice.



  • Up to 100,000 ISK is paid for each replacement, but only up to a maximum of 50% of the cost. 


A payment receipt must be included with the application. If there is no confirmation of payment on the invoice, additional confirmation of payment must be submitted, for example from a bank account or a payment receipt from the invoice issuer.

Laser surgery, lasik or vision correction surgery

Grant provided for laser eye surgery, cataract surgery and other vision procedures without the participation of Icelandic Health Insurance.


  • A scholarship is only awarded once for each eye.


  • A maximum of 50,000 ISK is paid for each eye.


A payment receipt must be included with the application. If there is no confirmation of payment on the invoice, additional confirmation of payment must be submitted, for example from a bank account or a payment receipt from the invoice issuer.

Hearing aid strength

Grant for the purchase of hearing aids. 


  • A maximum of ISK 100,000 is paid every 36 months.


  • A maximum of 50% of the costs is paid.


A payment receipt must be included with the application. If there is no confirmation of payment on the invoice, additional confirmation of payment must be submitted, for example from a bank account or a payment receipt from the invoice issuer.

Stay at a health facility

You can apply for a grant for a stay at the National Health Institute of Iceland and for treatment at the Blue Lagoon. 


Paid up to a maximum of ISK 2,000 per day for up to 42 calendar days every 12 months, but up to a maximum of 50% of the cost. 


The application must be accompanied by a receipt stating the patient's costs and period of stay.

Adoption from abroad

Grant for adoption from abroad.

The grant amount is up to ISK 200,000.


To receive a grant, members must meet the following:


  • That the member has been paid continuously for at least the last 6 months.
  • The applicant must be employed and paying a premium to Efling when applying for a grant. However, you can apply up to three months after the member stops paying if the receipt covers the period during which they paid to Efling.
  • Those who were members of Eflinga for at least 5 consecutive years before they left due to age or disability are entitled to benefits for up to 24 months after retirement.
  • Grant amounts are based on minimum wage membership fees. Those who are part-time and pay a lower membership fee will be paid based on a percentage of that amount.
  • The right to a grant lapses if the application is not submitted to the fund within 12 months of the right being established.


Applications must be submitted no later than the 20th of each month to ensure payment at the end of the following month. If the 20th falls on a weekend, applications must be received no later than the Friday before. Applications received between the 21st and 31st of each month are paid out around the 10th of the following month.


Please note that the special application deadline is in December.


Sick pay

80% to 100% of the average salary for the last 6 months before the member lost their salary due to illness or accident is paid, although up to a certain maximum. The payment period varies depending on the employer but can be three to six months.

Grant for accommodation in Iceland.

The grant is applied for on Efling's My Pages. The maximum grant is 10,000 ISK per calendar year. The application must be accompanied by a legal invoice from a recognized service provider, stating the applicant's ID number along with information about the dates of the overnight stay. 

Please note that the discount does not apply to Efling holiday homes or other unions
