the struggle for justice and better conditions

Purpose and goals of promotion
The Icelandic labor market has been shaped by the struggle of unions for justice and improved conditions for workers. For more than a century, unions have been on the front lines against employers, demanding that working people enjoy decent wages, safety and rights. That struggle has yielded significant results, including a shortened workweek, increased sick leave, vacation, maternity leave, pension funds and numerous social reforms that are now taken for granted.
Trade unions have not only made progress in the labor market but also in society as a whole. They have been a driving force for equality and social progress in Iceland, defending the welfare system and participating in building a more just society where the voice of workers has influence. The struggle has always been about more than just kronor and aura, it has also been about dignity, respect and the right of everyone to live a decent life on their own wages.
Efling is today one of the largest and most powerful trade unions in the country. Efling members support Icelandic society, they provide for its basic needs, work in care, cleaning, tourism, service as well as a number of other workers' jobs. These are jobs that keep society going but have long been undervalued and underpaid. Efling fights for justice, equality and a fair share of its members in the creation of value in society.
Through its struggle, collective bargaining, social action and strong participation in public debate, Efling has shown that unions are not only a forum for workers to defend themselves, but also a force for action and change. Through social solidarity, the company has pushed for wage improvements, increased safety in the workplace and pressed for social responsibility.
The fight continues. Efling stands with its members in building a fair labor market where everyone can live on their wages with dignity, and a society where equality and rights for all are the guiding principles. With solidarity and fighting spirit, Efling will continue to be at the forefront of social reform in Iceland.
